Old Joe's Boots

by Mike Loftis

Old Kate and Joe had lived their lives
Of nearly eighty years
Way up north where the cold wind blows
And decided to switch gears
They packed their truck and moved on down
To the warmth of the lone star state
October 1st when they arrived
the high was eighty eight
Old Joe had always had a dream
Since he was just a boy
To have a pair of cowboy boots
Like his heroes Gene and Roy
So he snuck out while Kate unpacked
And found a western store
and told the girl at the counter
What he had come there for
She helped him find the perfect pair
And with a big ol grin
He headed home to show old Kate
And felt like a boy again
He walked in and called to Kate
Saying come and look at this
Knowing that his cowboy boots
Was not something she could miss
When Kate walked in and said to him
What am I supposed to see
He answered back just look real close
There’s something different about me
Not a thing that I can tell
Came old Kate’s reply
Poor old Joe’s pride was hurt
And he thought that he could cry
He stomped his feet and said to Kate
You’d better look again
But she said I’m too damn busy
To play your games old man
Old Joe went to the bedroom
And took off all his clothes
Then put his cowboy boots back on
And went back to show Kate those
Tell me now what do you see
He asked her with a frown
All I see she answered back
Is your dangly looking down
Of course it’s looking down he cried
It’s my boots he’s looking at
Kate just shook her head and sighed
Joe you should have bought a hat

Mike! -what am I going to do about loving this poem? blush myself behind a ten gallon? Your rhythyms and wranglings turn and play so smoothly that I don't want the poem to... go away? ;) Jill
