Stolen Skies

by Mike Loftis

‘Twas just a day as the day before
in the city by the sea
The people going to and fro
with false security
We skyward looked at sounds of thunder
and with unbelieving eyes
saw our tower torn asunder
by a beast in stolen skies
Our cries went out to Earth and Heaven
Witness now the beast’s great sin
Unprovoked it stole our skies
and buried here our fallen kin
Yet though the beast had bruised and wounded
It could not kill its chosen prey
for from the mounds of ash and rubble
heroes true were born that day
From the ashes rose the people
united now as not before
vowing now to face the beast
to stand as one in righteous war
We’ll bring the beast to justice
or justice to the beast
We’ll dine upon its meat and bones
and revel in the feast
There’ll be no place the beast can hide
No adequate disguise
We’ll hunt down and slay the beast
that killed in stolen skies

Superb expression...poem Mike. Justice will indeed be served no matter how long it takes to catch the cowardly Binladen, who sends others to do his dirty work.

Great, tribute to an unforgetable day that stole the lives of thousands and changed the lives of millions,...and yeah unprovoked.

Very well done Mike. "A day that will live in infamy".....Charlie

I tend to question the unprovoked part myself...it really is a great poem, but the problem with poems with political content is its so easy to get caught up in disagreeing. It really is a wonderful tribute, even if I don't think we should go kill the beast.

Your words flow so well, that the rhyme scheme worked to draw me through the whole poem (almost in one breath). I'm not sure about the unprovoked, so no comment to that. ;-)

Powerfully and eloquently stated. (After the election we in the USA will be back to fighting terrorism united!)

I appreciate the imagery and passion in this poem, almost as much as I admire the talent of one who can write in many varied forms! You sho' can tell a story! This has a tinge of the Book of Revelation to me, and I felt the poem unfold as an incredible drama...

A very eloquently presented tale of that day of infamy and the resolve it has inflamed in some of us to combat the terrible murderers. Excellent!

One of the best poems I have read about 9/11. I just don't understand how some can question the unprovoked part. Congradulation on POTD.

Now, on this day, this poem is an excellent reminder of a chapter in our history that is still unresolved. Congrats on POTD.

This stirs and brings such sadness, -the kind of sadness we need to contemplate.
I am glad this is POTD!

Great story, if only it were just a tale and not true.......
