Sins of the Fathers

by Mike Loftis

A suicide bomber lost his life today
along with a number of others
Ishmael and Isaac are crying today
sharing their tears with the mothers
As the world watches on CNN
blood filters through the sand
Hope falls victim to generational hate
in the unholy holy land

Abraham crying out from the grave
“Have mercy on my sons and my daughters
Their blood flows in the streets of Jerusalem
Too many have fallen down martyrs”
His prayer goes unanswered as another falls
Which side was she on? Does it matter?
She knew she would not live to see her children grow
when she saw the guns pointing at her

The sins of the Fathers have been visited
on the children down through the ages
until the Talmud and Koran can no longer be read
for the blood that covers the pages
The world waits and watches for the latest news
Which side will strike back at the other
No one remembers once upon a time
when Ishmael called Isaac Brother

Very appropriate for the times, and so well said.

Yes...not too many realize that the conflict goes back so many years and can be traced to those two brothers...so does the whole of terrorism have its roots there? Really insightful and well written!

I re-read this poem again today because I've found this subject being revisited, as it may always be through the ages, in more detail these days than the past few years. Indeed... Ishmael called Isaac "brother."

And Cain was Able's brother. So in a way, they're just keeping up a family tradition that goes back to the first generation actually born outside the garden. It is such a sad thing. You wrote it beautifully. Congrats on POTD.

CONGRATULATIONS on POTD Mike. The sadness is that too many of us wonder when all this will end.
