The Old Man's Hat

by Mike Loftis

V1
The old man was sittin just minding his business
drinking his drink alone
when the young buck walked up and took his hat
and tried to make it his own
The old man didn't move from where he was sittin
and he never raised his voice
when he said a man ought to be a real man
but boys are gonna be boys

Ch:
And I'm a guitar picker and I drink hard liquor
and I like hanging out in these bars
I like fast women and I like fast spendin
and fighting just look at these scars
Now boy it's lookin like you're lookin for a whoopin
and that's what you're about to get
'cause I've been giving whoopins
since I've been living
but I ain't got one yet

V2
Now the crowd got quiet when they say the fight that
was brewing in the old man's eyes
then the young buck looked up from the floor
hit before he realized
He lay there bleeding from the whoopin he was needin
just to learn this simple fact
If you're gonna get squirly you're going home early
if you mess with the old man's hat

Repeat Ch:

This poem/song is wonderful! I hear the twang of a guitar. I admire someone who can rhyme adeptly, since it's not one of my strong points. One thing I looked for in the fight scene was a little more development of it, but that's JMHO. Good Work!

You don't mess with another man's hat. You just don't. There's some good country wisdom in these here words, Mike. Heh... can I put this to music?
