Four Painful Memories

by Mike Loftis

Invited to the wedding
I swore I wouldn't go
but there I sat as the groom
kissed the girl that I loved so
She never knew the way I felt
She thought of me as a friend
and though we swore to keep in touch
we never spoke again

Moving van parked in the yard
helping my father load
everything my parents owned
It was time for him to go
My mother died a week before
he said "I can't be staying here"
and that's the only time I saw
my father shed a tear

My brother loved the girl
but that didn't matter then
and I took part in his broken heart
when he suddenly walked in
There we were arm in arm
and though I can't recall her name
the love between two brothers
has never been the same

You...

The single word in the last stanza... superb. I think many can relate to this. How deep the cuts go... well written Mike

Eloquent simplicity... I remember this one and appreciate it all the more since it has been a while since I read it the first time.
