Granddad Was an Irishman

by Mike Loftis

Granddad was an Irishman
put here on this earth
to teach his grandson, namely me
what life is really worth
It’s not about the silver, lad
the gold what lines your pocket
The treasure that I share with you
you’ll never need to lock it
It’s all about the air you breathe
the sunshine on your back
It’s all about the hard day’s work
being thankful in your lack
No happy man has everything
Now, listen close my boy
If a man has naught he’s striving for
he’ll never know real joy
Be happy in the simple things
The true love of a girl
for if one gives her heart to you
‘tis then you’ll own the world
Be a friend to any man
that offers you his hand
and never ask a friend a loan
but give one when you can
Know that rain is bound to come
in each and every life
‘Tis not our troubles defining us
but how we deal with strife
And laugh a lot and laugh out loud
from now til you grow old
for every day’s a rainbow, lad
and every smile a pot of gold

Superbly expressed Mike. Definitely words to live by...universally.

Great flow and rhyme with a hearty spot of good old fashioned father-son quality bonding. :-)

Your Grandad was a wise man! This is a wonderful tribute to him.

Back for another read! I thought of this poem the other day when I slipped in a John Prine CD - he wrote a song called "Grandpa Was A Carpenter". I couldn't help but think his and yours are raising pints in Heaven!

A nice tribute, Mike. This flowing piece contains gems if one can really internalize them.
