Queen of Hearts and One Eyed Jacks

by Mike Loftis

The Queen of Hearts the mourning queen
lay weeping in her bed
knowing it was by her hand
that her handsome king was dead
Nothing could remove from her
the knowledge of her shame
and though she knew too well her sin
there was one to share her blame
The faithless knight the Jack of Spades
had led the queen astray
with lies that slipped smooth from his lips
that his heart would never say
Beguiling words and a lonely soul
had caused this treacherous thing
for seeing them in love’s embrace
had killed her love the King
She knew there was just one way
to turn their wrong to right
and so she sat and penned a note
then sent it to the knight
She wrote meet me on the morrow
and take me to my bed
Soon my knight you’ll wear the crown
upon the day we wed
Ambitious knight the Jack of Spades
had lusted for this power
Now at last within his reach
he waited for the hour
A light knock on his lover’s door
the moment now at hand
A night of pleasure with the queen
and soon he’d rule the land
He took his queen into his arms
She unsheathed his knife
and plunged the point into her breast
She would never be his wife
The wounded queen fell to the floor
The knight knelt by her side
and heard her whisper through her tears
her plan before she died
My love the king has been avenged
Mistress Fate has dealt the cards
and on the morrow you shall hang
for my maid has called the guards

This analogical poem speaks, narrating the story in its essence.

An incredible ending to the story... Your series reminds me a bit of The Highwayman - the way it's written is very elegant and eloquent.
