Suicide Kings and One Eyed Jacks

by Mike Loftis

The King of Hearts, the handsome king
lay lonely in his bed
with thoughts that he must search the land
for a maiden he would wed
A search throughout the kingdom
was made in all its parts
until the king set eyes upon
the lovely Queen of Hearts
Eyes of green that stole his heart
Hair of fire red
A smile it seemed bestowed by God
upon this maiden he would wed
Their wedding day brought forth great crowds
with joyful song and laughter
and in his mind they strolled into
the happy ever after
The King of Hearts, the happy king
knew love now without end
but as a king, as do all kings,
had duties to attend
Too many nights he stayed away
in the land, the farthest part
and left behind a lonely queen
the lovely Queen of Hearts
Her heart began to wander
in the absence of her king
She shared a glance and then a smile
It seemed a harmless thing
Quickly taking notice,
and with no love for his king,
the knight known as the Jack of Spades
did an evil thing
With words of love upon his lips
that his heart would never mean
the evil knight, the Jack of Spades
seduced the lonely queen
The Mistress Fate was cruel indeed
for as their passion burned
the evil knight nor the lovely queen
had known their king returned
Each night he’d dreamt of coming home
to know his queens’ sweet kiss
Never had he feared he might
see such a sight as this
Silently he withdrew his sword
and with simple choices made
called out the name of his queen
then fell upon his blade
No sound of pain escaped his lips
and with a solitary tear
looked up to see a his lovely queen
weeping, kneeling near
With failing strength he took her hand
and with moments left to live
gave one last gift to his queen
when he said love I forgive

Golly Mike, how do you do it? I have read 3 poems of yours and run the gambit of emotions. Each touched me in their own way. This one, this one.... the most. Well Done!

Skillfull storytelling indeed Mike, and what an ending! If only every man and woman would embrace the passion and compassion of this great king, this world would be a beautiful place for sure.

I love anything remotely Arthurian and I'm a survivor of, well, I tried to do what the king did over a woman (see my poem, 'Stuck'). You are a brilliant storyteller, Mike!

Oh the woes ...this painful poem makes me think of Guinevere.....and sadly, alot more....more than i care to....but it is very well written and shows the depths and many dimensions love manifests itself.
