i can spin just as good as you can

by Olivia Weinkein

because i could not fix me i am
finding a way to get around the
rough stuff, edges they thought
i'd fall from, but look, i found
sleep, comfortably and am no
longer struggling with images of
such mysterious creatures. 1st
there was him and then, quietly,
later, there was you. we thought
i wouldn't survive, i said, i will
never smile again and slept with
a thousand tears and wrecked leaves
scarring my hands. i could not swim
so i chose to sink for the
goodness, all of the goodness that
came out of hitting rock bottom.
and no, he wasn't there but for a
moment and you flickered in and out,
dangerously close to my coherent body
but i was numb so therefore, indifferent
and i waited for spring but the birds
never came. the birds never came.

to save me.

sigh. Maybe the birds got confused during the migration.
