Adrift

by Anne Engelen

Staring in the distance chin on her knees

on a wooden bench in a neglected garden

where ankle-high grass like a green sea

threatens to gulp her down in misery

On her wooden lifeboat she there fluctuates

Indifferent and insensible to the future

which, unfortunately, her awaits

Not feeling the cold of the pouring rain

Absent-minded she’s sustaining her pain

A vivid portrait of rejection, dejection, despair! Could be Alzheimers as well! A grave reminder of the loneliness and sense of futility there is in the world. Exceptional writing.

Like the garden itself you make us feel like drowning in the anguish expressed here. Nicely portrayed.

Both sadness and strength beautifully expressed here Lady Anne. I think the three rhyming words at the end work quite well together. Great work!
