what a father is for

by Patricia J Reed

when mommy finally said
i was coming into this world
you helped her through the pain
to deliver a baby girl
instead of craig
you then became daddy
and i was known as little patti
i cried a lot
and spit up too
and every once in a while
in my diaper you'd find poo
but i've grown up fast
and you wonder where the time went
i hope that every so often
you think it was time well spent
you always fixed my boo-boo's
so that they were all gone
and when i was in trouble
you explained what i did wrong
you taught me early
some stuf i never learned in school
like about the trojan war
that stuff was so cool
you've supported my journey
to try each sport
from softball to soccer
even the basketball court
first i learned to drive
and even though i wrecked the car
i've graduated high school
and everything's going good so far
it may seem like all i want is money
but please don't get sore
because now that i'm going to college
i'm gonna need a whole lot more
so for all the years of being dad
i'd like to say thanks a bunch
and always remember, even if i'm gone
i love you very much

Author's Note: this was a father's day present for my dad my senior year. however, my mom would like me to note that it was not my dad who helped her durong labor it was in fact the doctor with his various drugs. also, in the 10th line- the phrase 'every once in a while' means all the time!!
