We are fluent in silence
speaking the language
of nothingness
better than our own
mothertongue.
I say nothing
and you answer with
your reticence.
We hear everything
and understand it all.
Our silence
is punctuated
with quiet sighs
and the disenchanted
clickings of tongues
and the hard scoffs
escaping from our lips
as our minds
generate thousands
of snide remarks
about our lack of conversation.
We say things without speaking
which may sound romantic
even surreal
to those who do not
but so much is lost
in the translation.
