Rosewater

by Nicole D Gregory

I want to go
stand in the
rain
for then when I
cried
no one would notice
or know my pain

O, that I would pray
for roses to fall
from the heavens
so that the thorns
would rip to shreds
the skin that
bars me inside
but the petals~
the petals would
soften the blow

But instead
I stand at the
window
for my breath
is fogging up the
view
and be there a brick or
a stone ~ I would hurl
it through

Let me be the one you
look at over the
wishing well
throw that coin
in for me
ask me for my two cents
and I would rob
every bank
but don’t deny me my
words ~ to crumple
me up and throw me
into the corner
would leave me
where I am

~At the window~
~At the brink~
~At the edge~
working to
unlock the hinge
and go stand
in the rain
