Early in October Back in Time

by Thomas K. Hunt

It was early in October back in time
I remember it was a Saturday, it's so vivid in my mind
I was sitting on the back stoop as the sun was on the rise
Early in the morning I couldn't believe my eyes

He was walking across the lot with a smile on his face
ready for his bed in his own quiet space
When he'd finally crossed that lot he had given all he got
I smiled and said good morning and he said thanks a lot

He'd been working the whole night through
I'd been off since the closing at two
There was a gathering just next door
I stopped by cause I was ready for more

A few close friend were all having fun
I went to leave but she said no you're not done
She closed the door and said let's have a good time
Who was I to argue, I was in my right mind

Then she kissed me and called me sweet
She held me close and I felt her heart beat
She took me by the hand and led me to their bed
Words of passion were the only words said

I've often thought of that night through the years
I've thought about what I think were her fears
She decided to take the easy way out
and not let on what it's really all about

There is no one to blame
We are all here just the same
Without the two there would be no three
and the three is the only extension of me

A gift I wanted but never thought I'd obtain
was resting in her mother on that October day
I remember the call it was early in May
that mom and baby girl were fine and well on their way

Let the years roll by and steal the time
Secrets locked up in a hand full of minds
The truth held back to protect someone
Eyes were closed to the damage that was done

Sometimes I wonder about the things that I missed
I don't any more but I used to get pissed
There's no point, there's no turning back time
We are here now with love in our hearts and minds

Well, the first thing I think of to say to you after reading this is that it was wonderful experiencing your humanity. What a gift poetry is both to the writer and reader! Thomas you have a special gift of fantastic rhymes that punctuate the urgent flow of your poems. Although I have been away from this site for a while, what a delight to return and experience your gift and skill. Thanks a million?
