blue moon

by Lauren Singer

you have not found the compass.
i don't fault you your wrong turns,
but let me tell you, handsome,
you don't belong here.

i am going to sallow that gilded glow something awful,
and that smile's too masked in joy for ruin.

i have admitted flaws tonight
on the laps of hard cocks at 2am.

i am a scoundrel and a thief for good intentions.
you do not want me,
dirty-faced and half-aroused
at my own evil.

you want tender hearts with good intentions
from two-parent homes in minnesota where they
pronounce their 'r's' and don't stand
naked in front of open refrigerators
stuffing cold pasta into their open maws
so forcefully it hurts to swallow.

and that's not the only thing that's too rough to take down the throat.

but you don't want me candid and decayed.
you want pursed lips and lost abandon from your hand.

not someone else's coupon
on the self check-out line
during the closing announcement
in the back of the room
on the last night of summer
before you decided
this time
you would
change.
