bottom feeder

by Lauren Singer

for what it's worth
all the poetry that
we made together comes
secondary to the fact
that we never made it our
business to get past the nonsense.

i am in love with you in
a way that surpasses the
equation of too fit,
too right,
too true.

i am all that ever belonged to you.

darling,
i hate that you
love another woman
in a way that means
the tried and terrible
sex that we made attempts to put
past the obvious.

i wanted to be all that you needed,
but i never am enough,
am i?

i wish that you would
come over without expectation.
oh. the time that i would show you then,
crossing the train track from
our first kiss
and you would not recognize that
look on my face because
you never tried hard enough.
that is
the saddest part of all,
huh?
yes.
