puppet of the media

by Gavin M Roy

What happened to
Your American Car Flag
Flapping in the wind?

And to your
Bandwagon patriotism
And the flag waving trend?

No more flags on homes,
Overpasses, or on fences

No more silence,
Reverence, or condolences

Yet you haven’t forgotten
What happened or why

Your selfishness is rotten
And you no longer try

To make sure your neighbor
Knows you're patriotic too

To make sure the paper
Demonstrates it too

What happened to
Your American Car flag
Flapping in the wind?

And to your
(false) Patriotism
And flag waving to no end?

Nothing, as it was never there
Nothing, because you really didn’t care
Puppet of the media.

09/11/2002

Author's Note: Well I wrote this on my way to work on 9/11/2002. I was very frustrated the week after 9/11/2001 because of the amount of bandwagon patriotism that popped up out of nowhere. The same apathetic people who were flag waiving on 9/14 and probibly would beat up anyone who looked funny to them, one year later forgot about their patriotic sides. No more car flags, candles, or any other such show of support. Some called me cynical at the time, as I felt, and do feel that all the flag waiving was for the purpose of people showing that they were indeed patriotic americans, when in fact they are lazy, apathetic, brainwashed peons of their television and the "news" they receive through it. Patriotism is not a fad, as the media has made it into. It's not letting the flag on your car fade or become frayed. It's having respect for our government, military, and public workers. I see very little of that today.

You've made a point that is well taken. Bravo! Patriotism is honesty, fair play, justice tempered with mercy (even in family feuds and local community relations). You've expressed it well.

I remember how many ad for sales and discounts for 'America'. Made me want to puke. I love the American Ideals, if not America itself, but the brand label that people had made it seem is quite disturbing. I blaim people only a little more so than the advertising industry. Ads only follow what people want.

I can relate to the feeling of "false patriotism"... Society as a whole seems to just go with what is popular at the moment, caught up in the hedonism of that time, "whatever feels good, feels right, etc." When flag waving is no longer comfortable it disappears... thank you for the reminder of some of the things that patriotism is and many of the things that it isn't.

Reminds me how at colleges now, some won't display the flag because they say it makes some students uncomfortable

Very well put Gavin. I don't understand how some can be that way, all I have to do is think back to how I felt that day and it all comes rushing back at me. Patriotism has little with waving a flag, though it is some in part, but more with respect for your fellow man and country. Another beautiful work you have here, thank you for writing and sharing it with us.
