on arlington national cemetery

by Gavin M Roy

sacrifice defined
the many that have died
valor can not be denied

for our country they fought
for our freedom they taught
that defenseless, we are not

many wars over seas,
rows of tombstones at my knees
mixed in with occasional trees

how these men fought and won
sacrificing youth and their fun
so our enemies would be overrun

every war is represented
many medals posthumously presented
manicured grounds well attended

with a president among them too
many people that died for you
as our country struggled and grew

take a walk among their graves
think if they were here, what you would say
then share that with a solider alive today

don’t forget that it’s not just those who died
that sacrificed for you, or tried
the same respect should be applied.

Author's Note: On a business trip in April of this year I was fortunate enough to have enough free time to spend a little time sight seeing in Washington D.C. Of all the places I visited, I found Arlington National Cemetery to have the biggest impact on me. While visiting the monuments around Washington D.C. was impressive, it was not as impressive as the amount of people who gave their lives in the service of our country, or just served our country during their lives. If you haven't been there, I suggest you visit.

It seems too often we take for granted the men and women who sacrificed their lives for this country, as well as the men and women who serve this country now, with the same possibility looming. Poignant reminder of how great a price has been paid for the freedoms we cherish.

An excellent reminder.

Great way to remember them. The sight of all those crosses is something isn't it. row aft row of honor and valor. Just the thought draws the emotion in me. Thanks for the inspirational reminder. --bf

I love to see others (besides those I serve beside) with a patriotism almost competitive to mine. Great write, Gavin.

very powerful indeed. my good friend once served in DC as a member of the Old Guard... I have been there... touching place...

Congrats on POTD Gavin. Quite moving in its description and lesson. The cemetary where my recently deceased mother's ashes have been interred evoked a similar response in me. Also, there is a section there devoted to Canadian soldiers, incluging my grandfather (mother's father) whom I never go to meet. Kudos for the reminder!
