Word Police
03/26/2012 07:53 p.m.
I just received a message from an administrator threatening me with termination
for the use of profanity in the Politics Forum. Since I don't use profanity even in
my poetry, this came as quite a shock. I've only posted once in said forum
in the past month, so by deduction and the filtering of the three dozen or so
words I posted, I had to conclude that the word in question was "damn".
"Damn" is a profanity in the United States in 2012? I don't recall Tom Petty's
album "Damn The Torpedos" thirty-five years ago accompanied by censoring
stickers. Has America culturally back-slid this far? Damn.

It's my opinion that it is considered profanity. Via this link: http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profanity it is considered profanity by the general public. As a Moderator, I uphold, and abide by, the terms and conditions set forth by Gavin. If you are referring to the messages I sent you, the second was because you had logged on quite often after the first message and not edited your post. Profanity has gotten members terminated in the past. I may not agree with everything in the terms and conditions, but I abide by them.

Also, did you know you can't even say "freaking" in the forums? Seriously. There were several members some time ago, myself included, who were warned about using "freaking" and had to edit immediately.

What if you were making a comment about losing your mind and said " I was freaking out as the tornado hit".....used in context, wouldn't it be permissable? or not?

Damn, that really sucks. But I wonder what happens when we can't freaking edit what we write?

Clara, that context would be fine. Jim, if a person can't edit it, they can message a moderator to let them know. We are able to delete forum posts, but we give the member the opportunity to edit rather than delete their entire forum post.

Okay, fine. But if we quote Lady MacBeth's "out damned spot" monologue in a forum, will we be prodded to edit our quote for the sake of tender sensibilities? And, if not, why not? Frankly, I think I'd stick to George Carlin's list of unmentionable words and let other's slide. Because seriously, who gives a damn about a word like "damn" anyway?
