The Journal of Delilah Coyne Bonsai

Stopped at a roadside vendor on the neutral ground across the street from Target a few days ago. He was selling Bonsai trees and I've always thought these are the coolest little plants. I told the kids we'd swing in and see how much they were. Well, we picked one that was $20 and it's very small. My youngest daughter, Anna, immediately took a special liking to this plant and has watered it everyday since we brought it home. She treats it almost like a pet. She speaks to it and tries to kiss it, but it's a bit prickly, so she only did that once. My husband was joking with her and asked her if she was going to name it (she's 3, by the way). She simply told him she could not name the plant because it didn't have eyes. I laughed, but was struck by how profound this little statement seemed to me.
I guess, even at her young age, that she realizes eyes are an important part of awareness and being; that things without eyes are just things, not individual living things with dispositions and tendencies. Hmmm... out of the mouths of babes!
