Applying the Howard Stern Defense to the Ten Commandments
03/01/2005 01:17 p.m.
LOTS of people don't like Howard Stern. A good number of them probably actually hate him. He's got a foul mouth, (I'm not criticizing, because so do I), his content is beyond vulgar (again, not criticizing. I didn't become perfect in between commas), and frankly, the way he speaks to and about women he doesn't find attractive is inexcusable. (That's a criticism. Everybody draws the line somewhere. That's mine.) Yet somehow, even with all the people who find him so incredibly offensive, he's got himself a nationally syndicated radio show that lots of people love and listen to daily. His supporters tell his adversaries, "Hey, if you don't like it, just don't listen." That makes a lot of sense. No need to infringe on his rights to be an overall pig. I'm being serious. I simply dont listen. If i turn on KROCK in the morning (the local NY station where his home station is), and Howard is still running his mouth, I just listen to WPLJ until his show is over. That way, i don't have to hear what I deem as a bunch of unneccesary bullshit, and his fans still get to enjoy him. And all of his piggish glory. So, if I can find a way to live in a world where Howard Stern is still on the air and manage to not have my life ruined because of it, then somebody, please, tell me why something like displaying the 10 Commantments in a public courthouse is such a crime. How is it that the set of rules our laws are based on is an offensive thing? It's not like it prevents you from practicing your own religion or no religion. It's not like you cant still be Muslim, or Pagan, or Hindu just because you read the 10 Commantments on your way into court. It doesnt force you to be any version of the Christian or Jewish faiths. It just reminds people that most likely, youve broken one of those rules, and now your going to find out what the consequences for that are. I mean, damn, something really should be reminding people that Thou shalt not steal. I can't tell you how many of my personal belongings have been swiped from me. No, it's not my fault. Its because whoever steals my shit is an asshole. Something should be reminding people Tho shalt not lie. While I do believe in degrees of lying, and telling someone something thats not entirely true to spare their feelings borders on a noble lie, most of the lies I've been told in my life (and a great many other people from all walks of life, i'm sure) have simply been hurtful, and occasionally harmful. WHAT IS SO WRONG WITH ENCOURAGING PEOPLE NOT TO DO THOSE SHITTY THINGS? It doesnt force anyone to follow those rules, it just puts them out there for people to consider. Sort of a streamlined version of our own laws. And it's a free exchange of ideas. Dont we like that in the USA? Or is this Communist China, and we should start killing Christians?? I'm perfectly aware that the first 3 Commantments are expressly about the Judeo/Christian God, but just the way I ignore Howard Stern instead of trying to get him taken off the air, you, if you practice no religion or a different religion, can just ignore those first three since they dont necessarily apply to you. They can't just be left off because those christians and jews who do end up in court probably could use those first three reminders so they dont have to go to court anymore. It just encourages people to behave themselves better than they do. not for the religious. But for the secular. This society is suffering. People have become very selfish. They want what they want no matter what the cost to them, and with special disregard for the cost to others. How can reading the 10 Commandments, which warn against that sort of behavior, possibly cause more damage? It doesnt overturn the 1st amendment. Congress still cant establish a national religion. They still cant pass any laws that prohibit you from practicing your own way, or not practicing at all. So someone, please tell me, why are the 10 Commandments more offensive than Howard Stern?
