Today's Tragedy

by Jesse Chapman

For Joe

You were right; this life is a trade
between too much and not enough.
Here, the people in the mall are still
hauling their bags to some empty spot
under this years’ blend of lights,
first too many, then out.

You must know now
what it is about satisfaction
that still isn’t enough.
We keep trying, trying
until we’re choking
on what we’ve wanted, then
recognize what we’ve done.

And what about the child
I didn't save today for some reason
unremarkable: the time, the tempurature,
forseeable failure? Do you ever get to figure it?
Whether it's too much, too possible, or just
this cruel loss slinking off unnoticed.

This is a hard spoonful to swallow but you captured it sooo well.

wow, there is so much here, each stanza moves like a cloud, each one heavier as you read on...what you have captured: the desire, the lack, the subtle in-between, and finally the loss, even the ensuing discomfort reveals it's potentcy...there is so much humanity in this piece, and for that I commend you...peace, jewels

Tough to even read, so lord only knows what it took out of you writing it. Powerhouse work.

this is beautiful. i love the power of the word "slinking" in this piece.

The rhythm and line breaks of this poem enhance the experience of it particularly well. Thank you, Jesse.
