Amante Imaginario

by Elizabeth Seago

I'm constantly having these dreams that you're here
And they con me into believing that you're real.

And as I sit in a vast ocean of disappointment
I come to grips with the fact that you're essentially
An idea that I've romanticized.

And I wonder,
Oh I wonder
If you could ever be real to me.
For any significant amount of time.

If I could ever completely relax
In your arms,
The only place I feel secure,
Without worrying about when I have to
Catch a plane and catch myself from
Falling in love
With an idea--

Just out of reach.

Author's Note: Apparently...Amante's translates to Lover's in English. Oh, italian beachside dinner dates.

I can't begin to tell you how much I relate to this, especially the first few stanzas. This poem had a powerful impact on me. Its message is direct. This is one of our greatest tasks: growing in our ability to discern, prefer and choose reality over fantasy. Thank you, Elizabeth.
