Urban Shoe Legends by Rachel C JohnsonI dont wear shoes with laces,
but slip on something else
to cover my toes.
Ballet flats are usually
my shoe of choice;
though, I hold certain disdain
towards their presence on my feet,
reminding me of everything
I never became.
But I keep my toes covered,
for they wiggle too often left out
in the open, free
of the things
which I pile upon them
and all of the walking I do.
My shoes are usually dirty
after only a few days wear,
having pulled them along sidewalks
and onto trains and through
puddles of rainwater and acid
from the pollution in the air.
I cant rely on them, being so
feminine and petite,
to keep my feet dry or to keep
my toes warm.
So I wear white socks inside them,
which defeats every purpose
of wearing pretty shoes.
But, I dont wear them to be cute
although that is a factorand I
dont mind toes sometimes bleeding
from the stress of paper-thin soles.
I just grow tired of tying strings,
after Ive bothered tying things all day;
and I consider myself lucky,
never having to mess
with the consequences
of broken laces.

| Posted by Coleman Demiurge on 04/01/08 at 03:39 PM I can honestly say I've never seen a shoe used quite this metaphorically well before. I have never heard that breaking a shoe-lace is bad luck, but it would not surprise me if it is. I have broken, torn, burned and melted many of them... And that is nothing compared to what I've done to the soles. Perhaps you can tell a lot about someone from their shoes (I think that's from Forrest Gump), I guess you probably can if you take the time to look. Anyway, great work, as usual. |
| Posted by Alison McKenzie on 04/19/08 at 04:18 AM I have Flinstone feet - there must have been a Fred in my family history somewhere - I mean, seriously, you could power a prehistoric vehicle with these puppies. So, pretty shoes and I were never a possibility. Functional. That's the way it is in my life, so it's so cool to read something about pretty shoes that get dirty, and bleeding toes for the sake of "cute." But my favorite line is, "reminding me of everything
I never became." That one floored me!
