Firefly

by Trent Kirkpatrick

We were hypnotized from afar -
Their light trails were brilliant
And their sheen cut through the heavy Summer air
That our lungs struggled to pass.

We would stumble across muggy lawns,
Clotted with grass clippings that adhered to our shoes
As we stalked them -
Moving when they pulsed,
Watching when they hid,
Always bating our breath

Then gasping when we struck them.

Their luminescence showed the faults in our fingertip cells
And we gazed through the cracks at the glowing,
Which was infinitely bright in the sterling evening.

With quick snaps of our wrists,
Our prisioners were flung to the sidewalk,
Where they were enveloped in the tred of our grass-stained sneakers
And spread into a lustrous safron seam.

The beauty of the death sparked us
And was the first of many
Sacrifices to Summer.

It captures that feeling of being a boy outside after dark. I too killed the lightning bugs.
