Locust

by Nicole Hyde

Locust
The droning noise
Echoing every sound
Drowning out the words
87 degrees 7:45 in the evening
The sun was setting
We were in the courtyard
I was smoking a cigarette
He was smoking a pipe
Our dog and kitten rolled around playfully on the bricks
I stared into the heaven and into the treetops
Wondering if the locust would ever stop
He was speaking of the sciences and of great ideas
The roar was great and it consumed me
His words just trailed into the locusts' song
Never much for conversation he just sat smoking his pipe
The sun sets and the moon rises
We lay in the gazebo
A soft lawn couch
In a world still hanging on the evening scents flowers leftover from the spring
Dreaming about the future
Our marriage of the perfect blend of earth and stars
Still deaf from the locust
Or deaf because we no longer needed our sounds

A wonderful poem. I don't remember locusts, but do remember fireflies. The images in your poem are vivid and bring together plenty of memories. Love may be blind, but sometimes I think it's deaf, too. Welcome to Pathetic, Coco!

I have sat on my front porch (alone that is) and lost a thought simply by the next thought of listening to the locusts. They are actually quite soothing. Well, sometimes....

Wow. All of your poems are awesome. You just keep blowing me away with the stories inside and the emotions of it all. Keep up whatever you are doing, it works awesomely. coolsa.

I really liked how you pulled a peaceful scene out of the destruction that locust generally bring to mind. It is generally difficult to put a situation where words are impossible into words, but you've done it well.

Great images. They are very stark and bright.
