Not Our Stars

by Rachel C Johnson

The stars-
stepping stones for classic cliché
and those wishing little children.
As we sat last night
and watched them shift above us
I told you what I was thinking,
I told you my dreams.
Venus set and you promised me
I'd see it again.

I've felt alone, like they say you will
when you leave like that,
but I didn't feel the urge to see (my) stars;
so I wasn't really lonely in my head.

I didn't see you, I didn't see them,
and I wouldn't have been happy
if I had.
Memory's dawning on old illusion
and lights hide evening well.

I do remember (our) stars, (our) night,
I still sit in it sometimes
(and I do love you in the dark).
Yes, "the stars are my path,
the moon as my shelter",
and all the other things I might've said,
but Venus fell, and the stars aren't ours.

You can't be wrapped up for me.

I really like this for its matter of fact sobering message; the third stanza especially catchy. That last line seems somewhat out of place when considering the vocabulary of the rest of the poem.
